The Farm offers free entry to visitors and is open between:
9.00am - 3.30pm daily
9.00am - 12 noon on Bank Holidays
As an initiative of people from the
local community Wellgate Community Farm came to life in 1982 on
a 1.5 acre wasteland granted by the London Borough of Barking
and Dagenham in the form of a management agreement.
The name Wellgate was derived
from the local areas of Chadwell
Heath and Marks
Gate.
In 1984 the farm achieved
charity status. In 2002 the Farm was able to gain a long-term
lease from the Local Authority, which included a further half
acre of land. In 2003 Wellgate Community Farm became
incorporated.
Purpose
To provide a focus for community activity as a growing place for
individuals and groups.
Aims
To
provide opportunities for all through education, training,
therapy and recreation by becoming involved in any aspect of
Farm life.
To
maintain and develop good farming practice with particular
emphasis on animal welfare.
To
encourage access for all, whilst sustaining a balance between
the needs of the farm and those using it.
To
recruit and train volunteers to maintain and develop the Farm’s
activities.
To
raise funds necessary for the progress of the Farm.
To
develop partnerships with statutory and voluntary bodies.
To
promote sustainable development, conservation and other
environmental issues.
