News

The animals are enjoying the warmer weather and the veggies the rain! Successful Hatch Packs continue to allow school children to enjoy seeing chicks hatch in their own classrooms, looking after the new arrivals, watching and maybe even measuring them grow!

Unfortunately, it was a sad start to the year in the goat shed as we lost our lovely British Saanen Pearl after she gave birth to twin boys. After a shaky start and lots of tender loving care the boys are doing well being hand reared. They have already found a new home together at a school farm but will be staying with us until they are a little older.

A few weeks later and Heidi our wonderful Herdwick sheep gave birth to a very cute little girl. Mother and baby are both doing very well and enjoying the fresh grass on the paddocks at the farm. The little lamb is quite curious and will happily join her mum for a stroke from visitors through the fence especially if they come with a pot of food from the Farm shop! Please come and meet them at our next event Open Day 3rd June 2017.

Thankfully the outbreaks of bird flu (H5N8) in UK poultry began to ease and restrictions have reduced in areas of low risk. The Farm escaped without incident but we remain vigilant. We were very please to allow the birds access to their outdoor pens again but To comply with DEFRA regulations and keep our birds as safe as possible all had to be kept inside their houses or under cover for many weeks. Luckily we were able to utilise the spare stable, incubation shed and even a wooden greenhouse to provide them with more room during the day. So far they have remained safe and our area has been declared a low risk zone enabling the birds to enjoy their outside pens again. However, in order to reduce the risk the Farm is required to minimise contact between our animals and wild birds. This continues to mean no open water in the duck area and no scatter feeding.

Visitors will notice foot dips at the entrances to the Farm. These are there to provide  additional protection to the farm birds so we urge visitors to please use them.

Please be assured the H5N8 strain is a disease of birds only. Currently, Public Health England advises the risk to public health is very low and the Food Standards Agency has said there is no food safety risk for UK consumers. For further information please follow the link below.
